SEASONS

What’s your favourite season? Why do you like it? Everybody loves to talk about the weather.... so what is your favorite season? It's a universal truth that every season is beautiful in its own way. Isn't it wonderful to tramp down the country lanes on a frosty winter day. Everything is white with snow and it crunches under your feet. The rime sparkles on the branches and the icicles like precious diamonds hang from the roofs of the houses. It's a merry time for both children and grownups. They can go skating and skiing, sledging and having a fight with snowballs or making a snowman. I suppose, it is very pleasant while the frost lasts, an unpleasant time comes when the thaw begins. Cars and buses go along streets splashing the mud an slush on the passers-by. Everyone is grumbling and scolding the weather. But soon a warm wind blows up heavy grey clouds and the sun shines brightly in the cloudless azure sky. In a few months summer will come. Summer is the most suitable season for holidays and vacations. People enjoy bright summer days if they are in the country or at the seaside. They go bathing and swimming, and fishing and boating. But it's unbearable to stay in town on such hot and glaring days. Everybody droops and shambles and tries to hide in the shade. Then after a good rest autumn and harvest time comes. The corn has turned golden and the farmer will reap it and put it in his barn. The air is fresh and full of the autumn fragrance of ripe apples, plums and peaches and of course, coloured asters, chrysanthemums. But the weather is so changeable in autumn, people have to wear raincoats and umbrellas if they don't want to get wet through. The dead leaves cover the ground like a thick motley carpet, the roads are slippery and wet, there are lots of puddles in the streets and again everyone is looking forward to frosty winter days and much snow out-doors. It's rather difficult to say what season is the best one, however dull and nasty or charming and marvellous the weather may be. Speaker 4. If someone asked me about my idea of a good holiday, I’d tell them about our camping trip last summer. We escaped from the city for a week and were living in tents on the river bank. Being a city dweller, I’d never thought that stars could be so large and mysterious in the dark sky. But the best thing was long conversations and playing the guitar near the fire. We were talking about friendship, love and our hopes and dreams. I’m absolutely sure that no luxurious resort or expensive hotel at the seaside could ever compare with our holiday on the river. Speaker 5. Like lots of school students every year I look forward to summer holidays. However, when the holiday time comes, I feel a bit disappointed as there’s nothing very exciting for me to do. I hope that one day I could go to a far-away exotic country for my holiday. No, I don’t want to go there as an idle tourist and spend hours on the beach! I would like to take part in some important and exciting activity there, say, archeological digging or wild life watching or new lands exploration. I think the ideal holiday means that you can see and learn something new and do something useful.

TRAVELLING

Give a talk about your last trip. Remember to say: where you went what you enjoyed most of all during your trip where you would like to go for a trip in the future why? What means of transport do you prefer for trips? Why? Travelling Almost all people are fond of travelling. It is very interesting to see new places, another towns and countries. People may travel either for pleasure or on business. There are various means of travelling. For me there is nothing like travel by air; it is more comfortable, more convenient and, of course, far quicker than any other means. There is none of the dust and dirt of a railway or car journey, none of the trouble of changing from train to steamer and then to another train. With a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. From the comfortable seat of a railway carriage you have a splendid view of the whole countryside. If you are hungry, you can have a meal in the dining-car; and if a journey is a long one you can have a wonderful bed in a sleeper. Travelling by ship is also very popular now. It is very pleasant to feel the deck of the ship under the feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in the face and hear the cry of the seagulls. Many people like to travel by car. It is interesting too, because you can see many sights in a short time, you can stop when and where you like, you do not have to buy tickets or carry your suitcases. A very popular means of travelling is hiking. It is travelling on foot. Walking tours are very interesting. Hitch-hiking is a very popular method of travelling among young people. But it is not as popular in our country as abroad. My first journey. For some people there is nothing so exciting as traveling, and I’m not an exception. And I’m happy that I have traveled a lot and I hope that my first journey wasn’t the last one. First I bought a ticket for plane. Many people think, that nothing can be compared with traveling by air, because it is the most comfortable, and, of course, the quickest way of moving. There is none of the dust and dirt of a railway or car journey, none of the trouble of changing from train of another to streamer and then to another train. But booking tickets in summer is a problem. The air-fare is quite expensive and not all people can afford it. Then I continued my way by the train. This kind of transport has also many advantages. With a train you have a comfort and speed combined. From a comfortable corner seat of a railway carriage you have a splendid view of a countryside. If you are hungry you can have a meal in the dinning-car and if the journey is long one can have a bed in a sleeper. But I believe that there is no travel so fine as by ship. It’s wonderful to feel the deck of the ship under the feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in the face, hear the cry of the sea-gulls. Of course, the voyage isn’t exciting for those who are sea-sick when the sea is a little bit rough. Many people say: «Give me a walking tour any time». And it is not surprising. The walker leaves the dull, broad highway and goes along little winding lanes where cars can’t go. He takes mountain paths through the heather, he wonders by the side of quiet lakes and through the shades of woods. He sees the real country, the wild flowers, the young birds in their nests, the deer in the forest, he feels the quietness and calm of nature. And besides, you are saving a lot of money by traveling on foot. No one can deny that walking is the cheapest method of traveling.

PLACE WHERE YOU LIVE

Give a 1.5–2 minute talk about the place where you live. Remember to say: - - - what kind of a place it is (a city/town/village) and what it looks like what it is famous for what you would show your guests in your city (town/village), and why Ask only those questions which the student has not covered while giving a talk. • • • All these ideas must be covered. What kind of place is your city/town/village? What does it look like? What is it famous for? What would you show your guests in your city/town/village? Finally, you must ask each student the following question: Would you prefer to live in the country or in a big city? Why/why not? С3 You have to talk for 1.5–2 minutes.
