You don’t need a partner for this .Dancing is an aerobic exercise – this means it brings a lot of new oxygen to your muscles. This is really important because it makes your heart strong and  keeps you healthy. Dance 2or 3 times a week – at home or a discotheque! 4. Do you think helping at home is useless and boring? You’re wrong. Housework can make your muscles and bones strong. Cleaning floors or windows are also great exercise for your elbows and knees. Hippies wore unusual clothes. Girls, for example, often wore  Indian -style silk dresses and both men and women usually had long hair. They lived in groups together, often in quiet places in the countryside. Hippies believed in peace, and one of their  favourite saying was ‘ Make love, not war’. A lot of  hippies in the USA and Europe went on marches to protest against the Vietnam War. When the hippy movement started in the US, especially in California, young people showed their peaceful feelings by wearing flowers in their hair. For this reason, they were also called flower people or children. Hippies listened to rock music. They enjoyed the songs of Bob Dylan and it was  at this time that the Beatles wrote songs like ‘Give Peace a Chance’ and ‘All you Need is Love’. B Punks In the mid 1970s, times were hard. Unemployment was growing higher, especially amongst the young the young, and many teenagers felt that society was to blame. A youth culture started up which expressed these negative feelings – punk. Punk rock tried to shock people, while the hippies  were talking about love and peace, punks were full of hate. They thought normal pop music was boring and listened to bands like the Sex Pistols. Punks chose clothes that their parents hated. They wore ripped, Doc Marten boots and leather jackets, and often had brightly coloured spiked hare. C Ravers Most British pubs shut at 10.30 or 11.00 pm and outside of the cities there are few clubs and places that stay open late. It can be irritating when you have nowhere to go at night. In the late 1980s large parties called raves started up .They usually took place in empty buildings and you could dance all night to the fast beat of acid or techno music.  .Ravers wore casual clothes, comfortable to dance in: loose T-shirt and jeans. Raves became linked with drugs and the police often tried to stop them. However, the parties continued, as the organizers would keep the location of the party secret until just before it started. Why?            A night at the Theatre         My First Date         Young Love      Love hit me when I was 12. I was still in shorts but little hairs were starting to grow on my upper lip. A young girl, Lucy, lived in the flat above ours. She was pretty with lovely, brown hare  and perfect teeth. One day, after I had saved my pocket  money for some time, I invited Lucy to go to a variety show with me. I only had 70 cents but I had worked it all out: 2 tickets for the theatre, 50 cents, and four  tram tickets, twenty cents.     It was January and it had snowed earlier that day so we took the tram. Lucy looked charming and I looked handsome as we got off in Times Square. Unfortunately, a candy vendor was standing outside the theatre. I hadn’t thought about that. Lucy saw her favourite coconut candy and asked for it. Like a fool, I bought it for 10 cents. We were miles away from the stage and the noise of Lucy eating her candy was louder than the actors’ voices. During the performance, Lucy ate every single bit of candy. On the way out ,I was a bit  upset about the candy. But then I realized I only had enough money for one ticket back home. Today I feel terrible about this, but remember, I was only 12, it was cold and Lucy had eaten all the candy.       I turned to her and said,” Lucy, when we left home I had 70 cents, enough for the tickets and the tram fare. I hadn’t planed on candy. I didn’t want candy. You wanted candy and you had all the candy. I  have every right to go home by tram and leave you to walk. But, you know I’m mad about you. So I’m going to give you a fair chance… 1. Vladimir Vysotsky, the legendary Russian actor, poet and singer-songwriter, was born in 1938 in Moscow. For 20years, he was a leading actor in the avantgarde Taganka Theatre, where his performance as Hamlet was widely praised. Vysotsky played in 30 films and composed songs for The Vertical Line, Dangerous Tours, and The Wind of Hope. Vysotsky wrote his first song, TATTOO, when he was very young. In the 60s and 70s, you could hear Vysotsky’s hoarse voice coming from tape recorders in many Russian homes. His songs appealed to all kinds of different people and they ranged from fantasy songs to adventure and war songs. But common to all his works was his humanity and his ability to describe human experiences and express people’s feelings. Among his many songs, some, such as Unknown Soldiers’ Graves, About  Rumours and Wolf Hunt are still popular today. His biting satire made him unpopular with the authorities, and most of his  records and CDs were only legally released after his death in 1980. Vysotsky became a legend in his lifetime, and today his grave is a place of pilgrimage for many Russians. Pumpkin’s magical popularity 3. Cooking with pumpkin 7. Growing a pumpkin 4. Multifunctional use of pumpkin 8. Pumpkin in the learning process A Pumpkin is a large round fruit with a thick orange skin and large seeds. Pumpkins are 90% water but they contain potassium and vitamin A. Six of seven continents can grow pumpkins. Nowadays pumpkins have come to symbolize not only the lovely color of the autumn but the spirit of the season as well. A sizable number of movies were made with pumpkin and Halloween themes. Most memorable, perhaps, is the pumpkin carriage in Cinderella. B Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Native American Indians ate pumpkins for centuries before the Europeans landed. Seeds dating back to 7000 to 5500 B.C. from related plants have been found in Mexico. References to pumpkins date back many centuries, too. The word pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." "Pepon" was changed by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion." C In the United States, pumpkins go hand in hand with the autumn holidays of Thanksgiving, and, of course, Halloween. On almost every Thanksgiving table there is the customary 'Pumpkin Pie'. Pumpkins are carved into decorated lanterns for Halloween. Pumpkin is one of the important symbols of the harvest festival and has been an American favourite for over 400 years now. A lot of autumn festivals are dedicated to the pumpkin. Farmers from all over the US compete to determine who grow the heaviest pumpkin. D In the USA, pumpkin is a very popular Thanksgiving dish. We don't know for sure whether pumpkin was one of the dinner dishes at the first Thanksgiving dinners. But pumpkins were used in all traditional meals long before the arrival of the first Europeans. Most parts of the pumpkin are suitable for eating, including the shell, the seeds, the leaves, and even the flowers. When ripe, the pumpkin can be boiled, baked, steamed, or roasted. E Besides being used as jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween, pumpkins are used to make pumpkin pies, сookies and soup. Pumpkin is a warm-season vegetable. If you want to have a nice pumpkin for Halloween, plant the seeds from late May in northern regions to early July in southern regions. Pumpkins can be harvested whenever they are a deep, solid color (orange for most varieties) and the coat is hard. Cut off pumpkins carefully and leave 3 to 4 inches of stem attached. F Pumpkins are the real October icons – the fruit of the month, if you will. Since pumpkins are used as a decoration for Halloween, they can be seen everywhere! They're readily available, inexpensive materials for some wonderful classroom experiences! Their size and color, smell and taste make them perfect for observation and exploration. Working in groups students can search, suggest, ask questions, predict, and estimate the number of seeds in a set of pumpkins. G The pumpkin has been very important for centuries. It has been popular with wizards, witches and fairies. Maybe that’s why it is celebrated in so many festivals, folklore and fiction. People make jack-o'-lanterns at Halloween in the USA. In European and American fairy-tales witches often turn people into pumpkins. Even in modern the Harry Potter novels pumpkin juice is the favourite drink of the students of Hogwart’s school. The koala is a small bear-like animal that looks like a soft toy. The animal is cute and non-aggressive, but it’s difficult to see a koala in the Zoo and no one ever keeps them as pets. Why is it so? The main reason why people shouldn’t try to take koalas out from their natural home is their diet. It’s a strict diet of eucalyptus leaves as koalas practically never eat anything else. In Australia there are over 600 types of eucalyptus, but koalas eat only 40–50 varieties with only about 10 being preferred. And even if you find the koala’s most favourite tree and plant it in your backyard, you won’t be able to supply your koala-pet with food anyway. The thing is that koalas eat only fresh young leaves, and the tree has few of them. So, to keep a koala happy and healthy, you would have to plant about 100 eucalyptus trees! It’s difficult to explain why koalas love eucalyptus leaves so much. The leaves are tough and feel like rubber. They have very few calories and they are poisonous to most animals. Koalas, however, cope with such a diet easily. Nature has equipped them with specialised adaptations. Each koala eats approximately 200 to 500 grams of leaves per day. They are very slow eaters and they manage to get the maximum amount of energy from such a small amount of food. They also sleep for up to 18 hours per day in order to conserve energy. Koalas spend all their lives on eucalyptus trees and they don’t have any need to leave them. Normally the animals don’t drink water as they receive it from the leaves. For this reason the koala got its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning "no drink". Koalas live in societies, just like humans, so they need to be able to come into contact with other koalas. They live in suitable eucalyptus forests which are large enough to support a healthy koala population and to allow for expansion by maturing young koalas. In spite of their peaceful and sleepy look, koalas are highly territorial animals and don’t allow strangers to approach their “home trees” and “food trees”. The koala was hunted for its fur at the beginning of the 20th century and the animals were in danger of extinction. Fortunately, the population has been restored and today the Australian government doesn't consider the koala as endangered. To keep koalas as pets is very difficult. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated Most animals enjoy eating fresh eucalyptus leaves. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated Koalas eat low-calorie food. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated Koalas need a lot of fresh water to stay healthy. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated Koalas are more active at night than at daytime. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated The leader of koalas’ group is always the oldest koala. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated Koalas protect their territory from other koalas. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated The number of koalas in Australia is falling down dramatically. B: It must be somewhere here, in the passenger area. Look there’s the sign. Do you want to check your e-mails? Speaker A I’ve always been very good at languages. I can speak two foreign languages – English and French, and it helps a lot as I’m in the export business. When we worked on some contracts with Russian companies, I decided to learn Russian for business purposes. I bought lots of textbooks and spent weeks looking over them before I understood that I needed a teacher. Now I take lessons regularly and I’ve learned a lot of words, but there are so many grammar rules in Russian, and there are so many exceptions! I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to speak it. Speaker B I learnt German at school and I can understand French a little. My native language is English and my friends don’t think that learning foreign languages is important – English is understood everywhere. I don’t agree with them. Now I want to start learning Italian. It’s a lovely language and it sounds beautiful. I’ve got a pen-pal Alessandro, who lives in Italy, and I want to go there next year to see Rome and Milan and Venice. I think Alessandro will appreciate my speaking Italian. And travelling is more enjoyable when you can communicate with the locals in their language. Speaker C English is my native language and I’m quite happy about that. I don’t have any problems when I travel – people can speak English everywhere. That’s why I don’t feel motivated to learn foreign languages at school, but I have to do it anyway. According to the curriculum, I must learn two foreign languages. We start learning a foreign language at the age of seven. Usually it’s French or German. The second foreign language is a matter of personal choice – we can choose it from the list of available languages, which includes Italian, Spanish, Chinese and others. This normally happens at the age of 13 or 14. Speaker D Languages are very important in modern life. People travel a lot, they do business across international borders, and due to that, they wish to know as many languages as possible. However, learning languages isn’t very easy and it’s very time consuming. The quickest way to learn a language is to go the country where it’s spoken. It works, however, only if you learn it with a teacher and communicate outside the classroom a lot. Watching the news, reading newspapers and writing notes and e-mails helps a lot too. But the most important thing is not to speak your native language to anyone. Speaker E Lots of adults want to learn foreign languages but don’t have time for it because of job and family commitments. Children, on the other hand, have got enough time but they lack motivation. The easiest way to get children to speak a foreign language is to use it in a game. Young children are not able to understand language rules, but they can easily imitate their teacher and don’t mind repeating the same sentence many times if it’s a game. Pictures and toys work very well too – children pick up new words for toys very quickly. You have 20 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 20 seconds.) Now you will listen to the texts again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 20 seconds.) Now we are ready to start. Sally: Hi, Adam! Have you heard the news? There was an accident near our school this morning. Adam: Oh, Sally! Anybody injured? Sally: Fortunately not. But three cars were seriously damaged. Adam: Gosh! Sally: Yes, a lorry and two small cars. Adam: Oh! Sally: The lorry started to slow down before the crossroads, but the driver of the Peugeot 307 didn’t notice and crashed into it. And a second later, a Mini Cooper smashed into the back of it. Adam: Awful! And you saw it all, did you? Sally: Yes, I did. I saw it from the bus window. I was just on my way to school when it happened. The road was completely blocked because of the accident. I had to get off the city bus and run to school so as not to be late for my first class. Adam: You must have been very scared by the accident, mustn't you? Sally: No, not really. It's funny, but I became more popular with my schoolmates. Everyone wanted to talk to me to find out more details. Adam: Hm. And why did it all happen? Slippery road, fog or rain? Sally: No. It was nice and clear. There wasn’t much traffic on the roads. And nobody exceeded the speed limit. Adam: What was it then? Sally: I think it was totally the Peugeot driver’s fault. He was talking on his mobile phone at the time. He definitely couldn’t concentrate on driving. Adam: Using a phone is very risky while driving. Everyone knows that. Sally: Yeah. There are lots of things that may distract a driver. Smoking, for example, or talking with the passengers. Even the stereo system may do harm. When you listen to loud music, it affects how you drive. But I believe smoking while driving is the worst. The police should stop smoking drivers and fine them. Adam: Yeah, I agree with that. But smokers will object to your idea, I’m afraid. Sally: Never mind. All sensible people will support it. It would reduce the number of accidents I’m sure. You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds.) Now you’ll hear the text again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 30 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 30 seconds.) This is the end of the Listening Test. Speaker 1 Most people enjoy travelling but I don’t share their passion. The best holiday for me would be a quiet day when I can watch some films. I hate trains and crowds in the railway stations; I’m afraid of travelling by air; and I feel seasick when going anywhere by boat. What’s the point in travelling, I ask? Why suffer if you can see faraway places on TV? Speaker 2 I’ve always dreamt about travelling. However, travelling is not as thrilling an adventure nowadays as it used to be. Travellers of the past risked their lives every minute. Nowadays, people travel with too much comfort. They can always find food and medical care. Of course, safety and comfort are not bad things, but to me, the old way of travelling is far more attractive! Speaker 3 I like everything about travelling. I like staying in different places and visiting interesting sites. But what attracts me most is an opportunity to meet new people. It’s really wonderful that we can make friends with people who live right across the world. I’ve got lots of pen pals all over the world. We keep in touch via the internet. Meeting new friends makes life more diverse and exciting. Speaker 4 I like travelling. Once, my parents and I were travelling by ship and we were caught in a storm. It was Ronny’s birthday yesterday, and it was noisy there. I just didn’t hear you call. Neil: Ronny’s birthday? I didn’t know about that. Was it fun? Jessica: Oh yes! Ronny has just come back from France. He worked there for two months. And he talked a lot about it. Neil: Worked in France? Why France? And what did he do there? Jessica: He actually wanted to do a summer job to earn some pocket money. And he also wanted to travel. And he needed to practice his French as he’s going to university in two years time. That’s why he went there. Neil: And what kind of job did he do? He’s not qualified for anything yet, is he? Too young. Jessica: That’s right. But he was lucky. His family have good friends in France. And the friends needed an au pair for a couple of months. Neil: They needed what? Jessica: Not what but who. They needed an au pair. Au pair is a French word for a baby sitter. Neil: Ronny… doing babysitting! I can’t imagine that! Jessica: Neither can I. But he said he enjoyed it. The French family have a sevenyear- old boy and Ronny looked after him every day from 10 am till 2 pm. He taught him how to play football and how to play chess. And he also taught him a little English. The boy was delighted. Neil: I’m not surprised. Every kid would wish for a babysitter like Ronny. It was really fun for the boy, I bet. Jessica: It was. And after 2 pm Ronny was on his own. He said he made several friends there. And they went to Paris together every weekend. Ronny is crazy about football, you know, and once they even managed to see the French national football team playing against the Italian national team at the Stade de France stadium outside Paris! Neil: Wow! Now I see why he enjoyed his summer. I wouldn’t mind doing babysitting myself if it gave me a chance to see the coolest teams and matches. You have 30 seconds to complete the task. A. How to learn about Backpackers? B. For whom are Backpackers? C. Who stays at Backpackers? D. What facilities can Backpackers provide? E. How much is to stay in Backpackers? F. What is there in a Backpackers room? 1. Backpackers hotels or just Backpackers are extremely popular in Australia. They are the same as Youth Hostels in Britain, but have a different name. The name comes from the word “backpack” – an Australian equivalent for “rucksack”. Backpackers are places where travellers can stay for a night or for a longer time. The name “backpackers” suggests that if people travel on their own with backpacks, they don’t normally care for luxury and services an expensive hotel can provide. So, the place is designed for people to stay cheaply and safely while their travelling round the country or probably taking some educational courses. 2.Though people who stay at Backpackers are not very particular about the range of services and the equipment of the room, Backpackers normally meet all reasonable requirements. Three or four people can normally stay in one room. The room is furnished with beds, clean and fresh linen, bedcovers and towels are provided. Often one can see bunk beds there. This is quite convenient and saves room. There is also a desk, a couple of chairs, a mirror and a wardrobe in the room. Some rooms have en suite showers, but sometimes toilets and showers are provided on a communal basis. 3. These types of hotels appeared in the beginning of the twentieth century, they were used primarily by students as they needed cheap places to stay. Now there are thousands of them all over the world and people of different ages and different statuses enjoy staying there. There are retired people, groups of tourists on their own, families with and without kids and certainly students. They come from different countries and represent different cultures but everyone who likes nature and wants to explore the world is welcome in this friendly and easy-going community. 4. Usually there is a kitchen with the most essential kitchen appliances and equipment such as dishes, a refrigerator, a microwave and a coffee maker. So, visitors can prepare their own food or eat in a cafe. Backpackers’ cafes can offer simple but tasty dishes for very reasonable price. There is usually a TV in the hall, books and newspapers the visitors can borrow and the Internet facilities. There is also a laundry room with several washing machines, where one can get their clothes washed very cheaply. 5. Information about Backpackers is available in tourist agencies and International centers, in all kinds of tourists booklets and guides, and certainly in the Internet. As prices and facilities in different Backpackers may vary, it’s usually a good idea to call beforehand and ask about the things which are important for you. In high season the prior contact is very advisable. Backpackers can simply be full as they are getting more and more popular with people of different ages and nationalities. Once upon a time there was an old man who dearly loved his only son. His son enjoyed riding horses and swimming in the swift waters of mountain rivers, but most of all he liked hunting. The old man was proud that his son was full of courage but he was afraid of his passion for hunting. Once in a dream he saw that his son would be killed by a huge lion. The poor father was afraid that this dream would come true and decided to save his only son. The man built a nice big house for his son and set in a high place where he could keep his eye on him. The father didn’t allow the young man to leave the house. In order to please and entertain his son, the old man put paintings of every kind of animal in one of the rooms. There was a buffalo, a wolf, an elephant, a rhino and a deer in the pictures. Among them there was a lion. But looking at all the animals did not distract the young man from his boredom. One day, he approached the painting and spoke angrily to the lion in it: “You damned beast, it’s because of you and my father’s lying dream that I am kept here in this prison. I can’t do what I want. I can neither climb the mountains nor hunt in the forest. It’s your fault. What can I do to you?” And as he said this, he struck his fist against the wall to blind the lion. But a small sharp piece of wood got under his fingernail and the young man could not get it out. The old man called for a doctor but the doctor wasn’t able to help his son. The finger became red and hurt unbearably, it increased to an enormous size. Soon the young man died of the fierce fever. The lion, even though it was only a painted one, had indeed killed the young man, just as his father had foreseen. The old man’s son was against killing animals. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated The son liked staying inside the house. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated The old man decorated the house with the most expensive pictures. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated The old man failed to save his son. 1) True 2) False 3) Not stated Summer holidays for school students are the longest, but, nevertheless, I believe that winter holidays are the best. They are intense and exciting… and you can do winter sports like skiing and skating. New Year and Christmas add a lot to the holiday atmosphere. Not only schoolchildren, but most adults enjoy being out of work and classes and it’s fantastic time when families can get together and it’s real fun. Speaker 2. In my opinion we have too long of a holiday time during our school year. Winter holidays are usually OK, they are quite intense due to the season holidays we have at that time (I mean Christmas and New Year). And people normally have a lot to do during these holidays – they visit families and friends, exchange gifts and have fun together. But in summer or autumn I don’t know what to do when I don’t have to go to school. I feel bored and watch TV too much, which makes me feel tired and even depressed. Probably if I had a hobby I would enjoy holidays much more. Speaker 3. Yes, holidays are certainly the best time in our life, but my last holiday was a nightmare. The trip, I had been looking forward to, turned into a disaster from the very beginning. I was fighting problems every single day of my two-week holiday. I was late for the flight and had to wait for the next one. Then my luggage was lost, which was more than unpleasant as it was winter time. Then I got ill and had to stay in my hotel room while others were celebrating the New Year and setting off fireworks right in front of my window. Speaker 4. If someone asked me about my idea of a good holiday, I’d tell them about our camping trip last summer. We escaped from the city for a week and were living in tents on the river bank. Being a city dweller, I’d never thought that stars could be so large and mysterious in the dark sky. But the best thing was long conversations and playing the guitar near the fire. We were talking about friendship, love and our hopes and dreams. I’m absolutely sure that no luxurious resort or expensive hotel at the seaside could ever compare with our holiday on the river. Speaker 5. Like lots of school students every year I look forward to summer holidays. However, when the holiday time comes, I feel a bit disappointed as there’s nothing very exciting for me to do. I hope that one day I could go to a far-away exotic country for my holiday. No, I don’t want to go there as an idle tourist and spend hours on the beach! I would like to take part in some important and exciting activity there, say, archeological digging or wild life watching or new lands exploration. I think the ideal holiday means that you can see and learn something new and do something useful. You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds.) Now you will listen to the texts again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You now have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 20 seconds.) Tina: There’re only two days left before Miranda’s birthday but we haven’t decided on anything about the present yet. I’m absolutely blank. I don’t have any ideas, do you? Andrew: I don’t either. It’s difficult to choose a present for a girl. We can probably give her a large birthday cake. All girls like cakes and sweets. How do you feel about it? Tina: Don’t be silly. She’s on a diet and is trying to cut off on sweet things. She wants to lose weight and doesn’t eat sweets, biscuits and cakes at all. She’ll never appreciate this kind of a present. Andrew: OK, a book can make a good present. Tina: No, it’s boring. And we don’t know what reading she enjoys. Andrew: But I know. She likes historical novels and she likes adventure books very much. She reads them a lot and I’ve seen lots of books in her room. She says that books are better than computer games or films. It sounds strange to me, but she really said that. Tina: Anyway. Even if she enjoys reading, a book will not do. I want to give her something really original, a surprise she’ll remember for years. Andrew: Then I know what we can do. Miranda has always wanted to have a dog, but her parents have always been against it. They probably think that it’s very difficult to keep a dog in a flat or they may be afraid of dogs. Tina: That’s right. She told me that she’d asked them to buy her a puppy, but they refused. They didn’t explain why. But why did you mention that? Do you mean that we can give Miranda a puppy? Andrew: Exactly. It will be a great surprise, it will be very original, and she’ll never forget it. Tina: But her parents? Do you think they’ll change their mind? Andrew: I don’t know. But as far as this is a present, they’ll have to accept it. Tina: No, I don’t think that we can do it. Keeping a dog is a great responsibility. We can’t just bring it in Miranda’s flat. We need to discuss it with her and her parents first. Let’s leave it for the future and find some less exotic present for this birthday. You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds.) Now you will hear the text again. (Repeat.) This is the end of the task. You have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 20 seconds.) This is the end of the Listening Test. INTERLOCUTOR CARD Task 2 (2–3 minutes) You are a hotel receptionist*. Start the conversation: “Hello! To finish the conversation say, “Well, the doctor will be waiting for relative (for Mr/Ms…) at …. I hope he/she gets better soon. The Maltese Islands are a group of little islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The population of Malta is about 400,000 people. In spite of being so small in size, Malta is quite a famous place and lots of tourists visit it every year. Tourists in Malta have many kinds of entertainment to choose from. Clear and warm water is full of marine life and attracts divers and people who enjoy swimming and sailing. The place is also unique for people who are interested in history and architecture as there are lots of historical buildings, temples and cathedrals there. There’s the evidence that the first settlers appeared in Malta about 7,000 years ago, so this is one the oldest places on the Earth inhabited by people. The Maltese are proud of their unique history. They survived through the Arabs and Roman occupation, and they remember the knights of Malta, Napoleon and Nelson. They do their best to keep their history and traditions and are always glad to share it with tourists. Band clubs are part of the social and cultural history of the Maltese Islands. They see their aim in spreading the culture and teaching of music. The idea of forming some music societies or band clubs appeared in the second part of the 19th century. Small bands were formed in little villages. Anyone could join them. As most participants could not afford to buy a musical instrument of their own, well–to–do villagers helped to pay for the instruments on the condition that the musicians would perform at their village feasts. Today, according to the latest survey by the statistics office, the total number of bandsmen/women is over 4000. Many well–known musicians started their career in a local band club and performed at their village feasts. Now we are ready to start Speaker 1. Once I travelled from London to Oxford. It’s very convenient to get there by bus. The buses are quite comfortable and you can buy a ticket when you are right on the bus. You can buy it from a driver, it’s all right, but make sure, that you have the right coins or banknotes. It’s not polite to keep other passengers waiting while the driver is looking for your change. Speaker 2. Today we are going to see the most ancient part of the city. The historians say that some buildings there date back to the fifteenth century. The entrance to most museums, we are going to visit today, is free, but we’ll have to buy tickets to get into the Central Museum of Arts. I advise you to buy a group tour ticket as it will be cheaper per individual. We won’t have to take buses or any other transport as this is a walking tour. The meeting point is at the reception at 10 o’clock, right after your breakfast. Do not forget your cameras... Speaker 3. Welcome to our college! We hope you enjoy studying with us. On the very first day in our college you’ll get a student’s card. The card contains the most essential information about you, such as your name, the name of the school, the course you are taking. This card is necessary if you want to borrow some books from the college library. And it also gives you discounts in the stationary shop, in the students’ cafe or if you use city buses. Tickets for students are cheaper than for other passengers, but you need to have your card with you. And certainly if you go somewhere by our school bus, the driver may ask you to show your student’s card. Speaker 4. The students of our school enjoy lots of privileges. They can get free access to city libraries, half-price bus and train tickets, discounted tickets to swimming pools, and, if necessary, they can get a doctor’s consultation and medicines absolutely free. We also provide our students with six free hours of internet access for free. It’s enough for educational purposes and they can write lots of e-mails home to stay in touch with their families. However, if they want to browse the internet for more than six hours a week or play net games too much, they’ll certainly have to pay more… Speaker 5. When you register for the exam, you need to fill in the form. Please write your first name and your last name in block letters. Your contact information should contain your address and your telephone number, so that we can contact you by phone. After that, you get your exam ticket – it’s a special card where you will find your personal number, the date and time of the exam, number of the room you need to go to, and the name of your examiner. Please, make sure that you come on time. We don’t accept any excuses like missed buses or traffic jams. You have 30 seconds to complete the task. S: Oh no, it’s not that! R: It’s ok. And my name’s Raymond. Ray for friends… and for people who can’t remember long names. S: I-I’m sorry. R: Never mind. Do you remember at least what I was talking about? S: Oh, yes! You gave us lots of information about the college sports centre, and about facilities you have here for doing sports. I’m particularly interested in aerobics classes and in the swimming pool. R: Yes, aerobics is very popular among girls. Aerobics classes are the earliest ones. We run them from seven am. S: So early?! R: Yes, and if you want to book a more convenient time, run to the coach right now and ask what time’s still available. S: I will, thanks… And the swimming pool? What time does it open? R: From half past seven. But there are not too many people in the pool usually. Most people prefer cycling, football and basketball to swimming. We’ve got a very good football pitch and a tennis court here. S: You must be very good at all these sports. Where can I see you next time – on the football pitch or in the gym-hall? R: I’m afraid neither. I don’t go there very often. S: Don’t you? I thought you spent all your time there. R: Not there. I’m a computer geek, not an athlete. You are much more likely to see me in our computer club. Browsing the internet, making web pages, chatting in forums. See you there then. S: Ok, see you. You have 30 seconds to complete the task.
